I wrote about this film back in January 2017 before the trailer or the official release date, so I knew it was coming. As a fan of the original movie, I decided to check it out.
In a nutshell, it wasn’t all that, but it’s not terrible either. However, its kind of what I expected, so I’m ok with that. I knew there was no way they could measure up to the original movie, but the attempt was respectable.
The movie stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas. They take a slight twist by going inside of an old computer game rather than the board game from the original. All the adventures occur inside the game, and the A-listers play the teenagers avatars.
The movie felt rushed, and the need to get the big names on screen was very apparent. The audience barely knew the teenagers shown at the start, and the shallow surfaced descriptions of them made it hard to connect with their characters. Everything felt very obvious, and instead of leaving the audience clues everything was available.
For those of you that have seen the original, you’ll know the depth of the story and the details in the characters. The new Jumanji lacked depth and character development. The latest version removed the darker elements to create a light family-friendly feel, but there is nothing fun about being sucked into a game that destroys lives and the ever-present danger never seemed to appear. The spooky thrill was missing, and it didn’t feel like Jumanji.
However, the movie did have humour and a relatively large budget. Jack Black is the star of the film playing a teenaged girl really well, and his acting was excellent. Overall I’d rate the movie a 2.5/5 as nothing can compare to the original or the late great Robin Williams.
